THE Talbot Arms in Uplyme has been nominated for Best Community Pub in the Great British Pub awards 2013.

The pub has been recognised by the competition organisers as the centre of the community and joins other community pubs throughout the UK on the shortlist.

Winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony at London’s Hilton Park Lane on September 12.

Now in its sixth year, the BT Sport Great British Pub Awards attract hundreds of entries each year.

Since taking over The Talbot Arms 10 years ago, owners Steve and Wendy Gardener rejuvenated the pub to create a thriving centre for village life.

Most local clubs and societies now use the Talbot for meetings, and the pub also organises days out at the races, brewery trips, and travels to sporting events.

Steve and Wendy also host a ‘retired’ lunch and Steve can often be seen delivering hot meals to the doorsteps of the elderly and frail in the area.

Last December the pub supplied Mrs Ethelston’s Primary School’s children with Christmas lunch, as the school kitchen was closed.

They also hold the annual Talbot Arms Beer Festival in July.

Steve said: "We love Uplyme and its people. It is a great honour and privilege to have been nominated in the Great British Pub Awards."
