AN IMAGINED meeting between two great rebels is coming to the stage of the Lyric Theatre in Bridport.

The Cause, to be performed on Tuesday, July 10, considers the impact that a lifetime of political campaigning has on an individual; asking how far would you go for what you believe in?

1913. Revolution stings the air. In an orchard two women meet in secret. Their actions have divided them - divided a nation. Split their cause in two. What happens when the two women are suffrage leaders and rebels, Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett?

Marking the centenary year of the first votes for some women in 1918, Dreadnought South West’s dynamic production has original music by Sarah Moody (from The Devil’s Violin) and film animation by artist Catherine Cartwright, projected for beautiful visual effect.

There will be two performances of The Cause at 2.30pm and 8pm.

Dreadnought South West's writer of The Cause, Natalie McGrath, will be running a two-hour writing workshop for women at The Lyric the night before, Monday July 9, from 7 to 9pm. This workshop will explore what it means to write a rebellious sound. Looking at monologue and some great speeches by women, there will be an opportunity to write, speak, discuss and share speeches that capture the spirit of participants' voices, using a range of writing techniques for the stage.

Tickets are limited - advance booking is essential! £15 per person, available from Bridport Tourist Information Centre as above.

The Cause is written by Natalie McGrath and directed by Josie Sutcliffe. It is suitable for those aged 12 and above.

Supported by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring programme, Exeter City Council, Foyle Foundation, Fawcett Devon. Founded in October 2012, Dreadnought South West is an organisation that connects individuals and communities through telling great and courageous stories about women.
