Uplyme FC kicked off its season in DEL Division Six Brown with a narrow 2-1 defeat against Axminster Town.
The Swallows new look squad included league debuts for Ryan Botley, Darren Andrew and Ashley Hark as the club returned to competitive league action.
Botley shot over in an early Uplyme raid while at the other end Hark saved well to keep the scores level.
The opening goal came ten minutes before the break after Hark was penalised for a foul inside the area and Axminster doubled the lead from a free kick.
For the next fifteen minutes Uplyme enjoyed their best spell of the game and they pulled a goal back with an Andrew penalty following a push in the box.
Axminster then threatened to put the game out of reach.
They had one effort cleared off the line and then hit both the upright and the crossbar.
Uplyme pushed for a leveller right to the end with Toby Barnes almost successful with a shot from distance with the goalkeeper off his line.
The Uplyme Man of the Match Award went to Jamie Gower for his tireless work in midfield.
Commented Uplyme manager James Whetlor, “I am so pleased that Uplyme have got a team competing in the league this year.”
“As for the game, I’m obviously disappointed with the result but Axminster are a good side. For us, in our first competitive game together, to push them as far as we did is really encouraging.”
This Saturday Uplyme have a home game at Venlake against Offwell FC.
Kick off is at 3.00 p.m.
After finishing as runners-up in the Reg Eglon Cup competition, Charmouth FC start their league programme with an away game at Combe St. Nicholas Colts on Saturday (September 5th).
Kick off is at 2.30 p.m.
