LYME REGIS 2

HEAVITREE UNITED 1 (aet)

LYME Regis manager Robin Townsend was delighted to his side topple higher-level Heavitree United in the East Devon Senior Cup at Davey Fort on Saturday.

The Seasiders’ chief was also left perplexed as to how the game was forced into the extra-time at 0-0, with the number of chances created throughout.

He said: “For the neutral I imagine it was a cracking game of football.

“How it was 0-0 (after 90 minutes) was beyond me. It could have finished 8-2, there was that many good chances.”

Lyme were forced to clear two efforts from Heavitree off the line in the opening 10 minutes to keep the score goalless.

Eventually finding their feet, the Seasiders began to create chances of their own, having had an attempt cleared off the line themselves and also hit the post.

The game continued to ebb and flow and, with 20 minutes left, Heavitree had a goal disallowed for offside, meaning the competitive cup tie finished 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Lyme then got the break through just two minutes into the extra period. Darren Lock lashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area to put the hosts in front.

Five minutes later, Rob Fellingham popped up to add a second and make it 2-0.

An own goal from Lyme them put Heavitree back in the contest but it was not to matter as Townsend’s side saw out the remaining moments to advance.

“You could say it was an upset but I thought we were by far the better team,” the manager added.

“We created some glorious chances, it was probably one of our best performances so far.”

n Next up for Lyme is a home clash against Sidmouth Town Reserves in Devon & Exeter Division One on Saturday (2.15pm).
