SMOKE TRAIL will be aiming to follow up his recent success at Wincanton with victory in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap Chase at Southwell tomorrow.

Bob Buckler's eight-year-old needed no extra encouragement from Will Kennedy to run out a four-length victor at the Somerset course.

But he may face stiffer opposition tomorrow when he goes to post at 3.10pm.

The Irish-bred bay gelding, trained at Buckler's Melplash headquarters, could line up against Chery d'Or, a six-year-old from Alan King's Barbury Castle yard in Wiltshire.

Chery d'Or won his first race for connections over the larger obstacles last month and will be well fancied to go close again.

He may also face Venetia Williams' Stan and David Pipe's Lunar Crystal. The former finished sixth behind Bambi de l'Orme in the John Smith's Red Rum Handicap Chase at Aintree last month.

Another threat, better off than Smoke Trail at the weights, is Brave Villa, who has won three of his last four starts in handicap company.

Smoke Trail's stablemates Royal Fontenailles and River Indus could also make the trip to Southwell although they are both entered at Worcester on Saturday.

If Buckler decides to send them to the Nottinghamshire course Royal Fontenailles will go in the ladbrokescasino.com Novices' Handicap Chase while River Indus has a choice of the ladbrokes.com Beginners' Chase or ladbrokes.com Handicap Hurdle.

Royal Fontenailles will be racing for just the second time over fences after finishing sixth of nine at Ascot in December.

The eight-year-old, owned by the Ever Smiling Partnership, failed to live up to expectation over hurdles and has been hampered by leg injuries.

His trainer will be hoping the switch to fences and the firmer ground could bring the best out of him.

Finally River Indus may return to fences after finishing second behind Backbord in a three-mile hurdle at Wincanton last month.

If he does he may clash with stand out trio Cannon Fire, from Evan Williams' yard, Philip Hobbs' Dancing Rock and Peter Bowen's Lawyer Des Ormeaux.

The seven-year-old has yet to win under rules but has finished second three times and third twice in his 17 starts.
