DORSET coach Alan Willows was understandably delighted after seeing the county finally taste success for the first time this season.

Willows’ side stormed to a seven-wicket victory over Devon in the Unicorns Championship Western Division yesterday.

Starting day three needing 162 more runs with all 10 second innings wickets intact, the visitors cruised home for their maiden triumph of 2015.

Openers Masoor Khan and Curtis Blakemore took their unbroken overnight stand of 53 to 90 before the latter was bowled for 42.

Khan fell for the same score soon after but Ryan Scott (32) and Luke Webb (35) added 67 together to take Dorset closer to their target of 215.

An undefeated stand of 47 between Webb (42 not out) and Jake Lintott (36 not out) saw captain Chris Park’s men over the line.

“To be 90 behind after the first innings and win the game by lunch on day three is unbelievable,” said Willows.

“We were 53-6 in our first innings and the 120-run partnership between Chris Park and Mark Wolstenholme was outstanding.

“Chris probably wouldn’t say it but on a pitch that wasn’t easy to bat on, his and Mark’s partnership set us up for the win.

“Devon played some indifferent shots in their second innings but our fielding was absolutely outstanding.

“That session between lunch and tea on Monday was probably the best we’ve played this season.

“When we had a sniff we took our opportunities, and that’s the sign of a good side. It’s something we haven’t done in the past.”

Dorset will now bring the curtain down on their season with a championship match against Berkshire starting on August 16.

Yesterday’s win took Dorset up to fifth in the 10-team Western Division table, and Willows feels the defeat of Devon was just reward for the effort the players have put in this summer.

“We have competed in nearly every game this season,” he added. “We could have won every game in the one-day competition.

“There were matches in the championship where we could have played better but didn’t take chances when they came our way.

“But we haven’t lost in our last three games and we’ve played some pretty good cricket.

“We outplayed Shropshire and Cheshire before they finished as draws, and we outplayed Devon.”

And on cricket in the county in general, he continued: “People have a lot to say about Dorset cricket but some don’t understand what is happening.

“We’ve got competition for places and it’s very encouraging for the future that there are a lot of lads that want to play for Dorset.

“I hope we are able to compete because we want guys to be playing county cricket.”
