Uplyme FC 2
Elmore Thirds 4
Uplyme got their Devon and Exeter Football League campiagn underway but were well beaten by a strong Elmore Thirds side.
The Swallows got off to a terrible start after conceding a penalty in the first five minutes of the Division Four match and were 3-0 down by the time the half time whistle after a lack lustre first half performance.
Manager Steve Gillan made tactical changes at the break though and the introduction of seventeen-year-old Josh Frewin made an instant impact as he went through to score early in the second half.
Joe Walsh then narrowed the gap further but as Uplyme pressed high, looking for an equaliser, they were caught on the break for Elmore’s fourth goal.
Speaking to The News after the defeat, the Swallows boss said: “We were disappointed but very encouraged by the second half response.
“Their first team did not have a game so it looked like they strengthened in certain areas from a big pool of players. We get that a fair bit in our league."
By a quirk fixture programming, Uplyme are away to the same opposition on Saturday, September 7, when several of their missing senior players should be back.
