TROPHIES were dished out on an exciting day of play at Seaton's Club Championships.

In the ladies’ singles, 2020 winner Jo Little and emerging junior, Amelia Smith contested a hard fought final with long base line rallies in which both ladies demonstrated superb consistency and very few unforced errors.

Smith edged the opening set 6-4 and led throughout an attritional second set, before Little fought back gamely, taking the set 7-5. In a championship tie-break, Little held her nerve to close it out 10-6.

In the men's final, club coach and former winner Kevin Davis met newcomer Stuart Loudwell who had previously deposed last year’s winner, Iain Horlock, in a tense quarter-final.

In a high-quality first set, Davis fired a barrage of ground strokes off both wings, his serves regularly exceeding 100mph on the speed gun, winning 6-2.

Loudwell's aggressive game plan opened up a 2-1 lead in the second set, only for Davis to respond with even more firepower with five unanswered games and with it the title.

Davis partnered Matt Jobson in the men's doubles final, the latter remarkably back in a final for the first time in 20 years, while Loudwell partnered Pete Moroz.

A high octane battle followed to the delight of the thrilled 50-strong as both pairs sought to dominate the net with volleys in the face of blistering ground strokes from their opponents.

Loudwell and Moroz capitalised on winning the key points, prevailing 6-4 and 7-5, the laconic Loudwell celebrating his revenge with a muted “Yes!” and fist pump after the final point.

Little again and partner Barry Follett battled against husband and wife team Jen and Chris Rose, beaten finalists four times in the last six years, in the mixed doubles.

Little and Follett worked the angles effectively from the net as they quickly established a 4-1 lead before closing out the first set 6-3.

The Roses raced into a 3-0 lead in the second, but their lead evaporated to 5-5 before Follett and Little broke serve to lead 6-5.

Following a marathon eight deuces and five match points the Roses broke back for the tie-break, then levelling the match 7-3 in the breaker.

In a nerve shredding championship tie-break, the Roses finally ran out winners 15-13, with Chris astonishingly reclaiming a title he last won 27 years ago.

The ladies’ doubles winners were Jo Little and Susan Green thanks to a walkover.

Club chairman Simon Prior said: "Finals day has capped a great summer season for Seaton Tennis Club with Ladies B, Ladies C, Men’s B and Mixed D all winning promotion from their respective divisions.

"And the crowning glory may well be the Mixed A team becoming champions of the East Devon League with everything hinging on their last two fixtures in Division One.”
