BRIDPORT 1 STREET 4

BRIDPORT sustained a third defeat of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division season with a 4-1 home loss to Street.

The Bees have shown signs of improvement in recent games and were bitterly unlucky not to at least take Fleet to an FA Cup replay on Saturday after their dramatic injury-time loss.

Just like Saturday, Bridport took the lead as Michael Hill floated a well-struck shot over the Street goalkeeper from 25 yards in the third minute.

But Street came back into it shortly after as Harry Foster sped through the Bridport defence before finishing past Jordon Scadding.

Street made it 2-1 when a defensive mix-up allowed Jordan Lovibond to fire home.

Bridport had a mountain to climb when Foster netted his second from a stonewall penalty, given for a tackle from behind in the area.

The Cobblers’ Ollie Pearson had a tap-in for a fourth when he reacted quickest to Scadding’s excellent save.

The closest Bridport came to a second was when Riley Weedon’s drive smacked the bar and bounced off the Street keeper to safety.

In the end, the Bees endured another difficult day in the Western League.

Speaking post-match, boss Rob Marquis said: “We got what we deserved and I’ll take responsibility for it.

“We need to do some more work in training (today) and confidence is low, we need to help them improve.

“We’re not good when we concede.

“We’re inexperienced and there are players coming in not necessarily from this level.

“There are different things we’ve got to work on and we’re building.

“We went 1-0 up and were looking alright but then conceded a preventable goal again.

“It shakes them too much and even if we give a bad goal away, we’ve got to learn to deal with it and move on – not concede another goal on the back of it.

“We could’ve made better decisions but that’s the way you learn.

“We’re getting some hard lessons.

“I want to pick them up and it’s going to be a difficult team talk on Saturday, that’s not an easy one going to Millbrook.

“We’ve just got to go again.”

Bridport embark on a long trip to Cornwall on Saturday to face the Magpies.

Bees: Jo Scadding, Baker (Burwood 62), Ja Scadding, Owen, Baggs, Hansford, Stanners, Gear, Hill, Weedon, Walbridge (Greenwood-Neate 67).
