UPLYME & LYME REGIS 149-8 (18pts) beat SIDMOUTH III 110 (6pts) by 39 runs

TYLER Wellman starred with a stunning 6-24 as Uplyme & Lyme Regis defeated Sidmouth Thirds by 39 runs at King George V Playing Fields.

Victory ended a run of three losses in Devon League D Division East, keeping Uplyme 26 points leaders Alphington.

In a low-scoring game with bad weather loitering, Uplyme won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sidmouth’s Thomas Burhop (2-39) struck twice to remove Uplyme openers Harvey Brimicombe (0) and Mark Batey (10).

Lee Clayden (2-43) picked up his own brace, bowling destructive duo Wellman (17) and Sam Farrow (4) as Uplyme reached 67-4.

First change bowler Jash Patidar (3-22) ripped out Uplyme’s middle order, including Charlie Moss (19), who hit the sole six of the innings.

Jerry Simms responded with a gritty 27 not out from 71 balls as Uplyme ground out 149-8 from 40 overs.

Those late runs proved crucial as Uplyme defended their total.

Sidmouth made an ominous start, racing to 52-0 before the introduction of Wellman changed the game.

The pacy all-rounder removed set openers David Watkins (25) and Charles Brock (29) before castling Patidar (2).

Jack Lamb-Wilson swooped to run out Ollie Pugsley (24) – whose runs came entirely from boundaries – and Jibu Varghese bowled Lee Clayden (1) to leave Sidmouth on 87-5.

Mark Brimicombe (2-12) chipped in with a crucial double before Wellman skittled the tail to complete his six-for as Uplyme claimed 18 points.
