BRIDPORT Barracudas made a splash once more with seven medals at the Dorset County Championships.

This year Bridport had 15 competitors qualify to swim at the Dorset County Championships.

Weekend one saw five Barracudas achieve medals with Holly Symes (400m freestyle), Herbert Busby (50m butterfly) and Henry Wyrill (50m backstroke) winning silver, while Kian Vercoe (50m butterfly) and Caitlin Sloman (50m backstroke) won bronze.

Seven Barracudas made it to the finals, meaning they were in the top eight in their age group – Barracudas congratulated Kian, Herbert, Holly, Thomas and Will Caplen, Henry and Caitlin.

Six club records were also smashed by Sloman, Thomas Caplen, Daniel Van Zyl, Oscar Vercoe and Wyrill.

The second weekend brought two more medallists with Sloman achieving a bronze in the 200m butterfly and Kian Vercoe in the 100m butterfly.

Four swimmers made it to finals with Symes swimming twice. Jess St Barbe Baker, Kian Vercoe and Sloman were the other finalists.

Elsewhere, Daniel Van Zyl broke two more club records in the 50 and 100m freestyle.

Will Caplen secured himself his first ever regional consideration time and is set to compete in Plymouth, Millfield and Hengrove later this year.

Others who qualified to swim were Theo McCarthy, Sam Westcott, Courtney Pearce and Ruby Millard who all put in a brilliant performance, plus Jack Turner who was unable to swim.

n Barracudas train up to four times a week at Bridport Leisure Centre and are a competitive swimming club that also offers a ‘learn to swim’ teaching programme from school age and above.

The club offers the chance to compete in galas locally, through to national opportunities.
