SHAFTESBURY’S Bowden brothers enjoyed a double success as the Weymouth ADC league tested its new Open series ahead of its summer introduction.

Owen Bowden took the main event prize, knocking brother Mark out in the first round before going on to claim the title.

Mark Bowden then entered the plate competition and duly took it down to secure a remarkable double for the north Dorset siblings.

After defeating brother Mark, Owen knocked out Chris Burton and Arnie Quinn before defeating ADC league leader Danny Aplin in a superb final.

In a high-quality encounter, the final yielded three 180s, numerous 100-plus scores and a 106 out-shot that gave Bowden a 4-2 victory and the prize pot.

After a first-round exit players then had the chance to take some glory from the night in the plate competition.

A strong field in the second event saw Mark Bowden take this title as he defeated Andy Masters and Simon Churchill before dismissing Mel Burton 3-0 in the final to give the brothers double success.

It was not the end for players exiting early from the meeting as they entered the ‘last chance saloon’ title.

This event comprised of a rapid one-leg 501 double in, double out and was eventually won by Trevor Honnor who defeated Nige Davis the final.

A good mixture of regular and new faces saw the trial of the summer format go down well with all players.

Committee member Quinn explained the reasoning for the change in format for the summer season.

He said: “The open season in the summer gives all players of all abilities (the chance) to come play any Monday they feel and not have the worry of being there every week.

“We plan on running a side league for players who want to play in the same format but the open season is purely about getting new faces in, giving players the opportunity to play under little to no pressure and join a great group of guys in the process.

“The exciting thing about this format is even if you lose a couple games you’ll still have some more to play after and with a chance to take a small cash prize home.

“This is entirely open to anyone so feel free to come along and have a go.”

Weymouth ADC thanks GP Metals and Spares, Weymouth Bay Rib Charter and Marlboro Fish and Chips for sponsoring throughout the season.

ADC league action returns on Monday night at Wyke Working Men’s Club.
