WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club beat Richmond Docklands 3-0 in a vital game for the leaders’ promotion aspirations from National League Men’s Division Two South.

Weymouth went into the game hoping to bounce back after their National Shield defeat to London Aces – higher league opposition.

The team had to travel with injuries ravaging the skeleton squad and four players missing.

Weymouth started well, trading early points with the young Richmond team.

After a few early struggles, as a result of good serving and blocking from Richmond, the away side started to push on.

At 16-15 it was time for a technical time-out and with good backcourt defence Weymouth went on to win the set 25-18.

As the teams changed ends, Weymouth felt as though they may have broken the inexperienced Richmond teams resolve with their increased intensity. Weymouth kept the level high, passing well and hitting with precision.

Having the experienced Valdis Baranovs through the middle gave setter Ryan Stout multiple options leaving Richmond unclear on where the next attack would be coming from, Weymouth taking the second set 25-14.

After not challenging the league leaders in the second set, Docklands made changes to their line-up for the third.

The set got off to a scrappy start with both teams making errors. Weymouth managed to snap themselves out of a run of bad points and turn the score around in their favour halfway through the set.

The passing unit continued to excel and outside hitter, Sean Hendry, was able to put away some strong spikes, finding the gaps in Richmond’s defence as Weymouth closed out the match 25-18.

Tonight, Weymouth travel to Oxford for an unknown challenge, facing them for the first time (6pm).
