BOXING fans were treated to an amazing night of fights and entertainment at Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club’s David Nelmes Memorial Show.

The evening at Weymouth Pavilion was started by the ringing of the 10 bells for the passing of stalwart Nelmes – an ex-national schoolboy champion in 1961 who went on to concede only three bouts out of 104, who sadly passed away at the start of the year.

The crowd were on their feet in respect for David.

With the crowd in full swing after paying their respects, the county bouts began with Dorset losing 4-2 to Hampshire.

At the next bell the boxing started, first off was Weymouth’s Bailey Stone in a skills bout, where no score is awarded.

Stone displayed all the skills he had been taught and fought with great heart.

The next Weymouth boxer up was 12-year-old Kamari Freeman against a Wimborne boxer in a match only made at 1pm that day.

Freeman gave it his best efforts in his first real bout conceding to the stronger boxer, who made it very tough for the Weymouth talent.

Zack Harrop was the final Weymouth boxer up against Harry Woods from Fareham in a county match.

The contest was one of the best bouts of the night with both boxers fighting their hearts out in an ebb and flow bout.

Punch after punch went between one boxer to the other, again it was the first real bout for both boxers and they should be both proud with Woods coming out on top with a better punch power and score rate.

Awards on the night were given to Weymouth’s Ollie Carr & his dad Adam. Ollie received the new David Nelmes trophy for Sportsman of the Year, voted for by the boxers.

Adam received the Gordon Nelmes trophy for all his hard work, both on the committee, within the club and all the help he gave David.

Mark Ford, Weymouth head coach, thanked all his coaching team with Dominic Davey in the corner and Jack Barlow behind the scenes warming the team up.

Ford said a great job was done by all, along with all the hard work of the committee behind the scenes. Ford also thanked the officials on the night who gave up their free time to make the night go off with a bang.

Ford praised the outstanding team efforts of Dorset teams Grey Ranks, Portland, Sturminster Newton, Parkstone, Arena Wessex and Mackenzies – some having very short notice with match-making.

Weymouth ABC thanks local businesses for the raffle prizes given and praised a raucous crowd for their support in cheering the young fighters and fundraising.

Weymouth ABC will close for Christmas on Thursday, December 12 and re-opens on Tuesday, January 7.

Weymouth ABC also thanked sponsors Actors, DEP, Loose Moose catering, Weymouth Pavilion, Corner House Café, Advoco, Build rite, Turrell, W Ronald, Tristan Murless, Lee Wills, Yess, Cooke Construction, Weyfish, IML, Fish n Fritz, Portland Stone, Weyprint, Fiona Penny, Remarkable Carpets, Derek Luckhurst and the Weymouth Tandoori.
