HAMWORTHY REC 7

DORCHESTER SPORTS 2

DORCHESTER Sports fell to chastening 7-2 defeat at runaway Dorset Premier League leaders Hamworthy Recreation, ending the match with nine fit players.

Sports, who were chasing a third straight win, were instantly on the back foot as 15 seconds from kick-off Sam Carter nipped across his man to head home a cross from the left wing.

Sports’ goalkeeper Ash Weeks then tripped the Rec striker for a penalty, Carter stepping up to convert for 2-0.

Carter sealed a first-half hat-trick in the 39th minute when Sports failed to cut out a direct ball, leaving Carter with a tap-in.

Seeking to reduce the deficit, Sports duly scored as Curtis Hansford netted a 20-yard strike in the 42nd minute to give the away side a glimmer of hope.

Almost immediately after Hansford’s goal, Rec re-established their three-goal cushion when George Webb cut inside and curled a beauty into the far corner for a 4-1 half-time lead.

Carter resumed his stunning goalscoring touch with a fourth in the 48th-minute as Rec led 5-1.

Sports then held Hamworthy at bay and were rewarded with 19 minutes left as left-back Paul Hill’s mazy dribble and curling shot into the corner made it 5-2.

Having made all three changes, Sports were dealt a blow when substitute Ryan Ross was forced off with injury and Rec took full advantage when Richards Sands beat Weeks for 6-2.

Sports’ striker Alex Stafie then twisted an ankle, leaving the visitors with nine men, and Sam Thompson finished the scoring in the 84th minute against the deflated away side.

Speaking to Echosport, Dorchester Sports’ assistant-boss Steve Churchill felt the scoreline did not truly reflect the game.

“It wasn’t a 7-2 game,” he said. “They were the better side, easily. We were 2-0 down before we even started, but we had spells of possession and stopped them playing.

“We just didn’t have the cutting edge they had. They’re very direct from defence to attack and play it forward really quickly.

“They’ve got the players to hurt you. They’re a very clinical team and score a lot of the chances they create, whereas we didn’t have that unfortunately.”

Rec maintained their 100 per cent record, storming to a maximum 33 points from 11 games.

Second-placed Gillingham are nine points behind and have played one more game than the defending champions.

Dorchester Sports, however, dropped a place to eighth after their defeat, coupled with Holt’s 7-0 thumping of Shaftesbury Town Reserves.
