WEYMOUTH extended their unbeaten start to their first year in National League Division Two South with a 3-1 win over Urbond from Portsmouth.

However, this was a very tight and exciting match which could have gone either way.

Urbond were promoted from Division Three along with Weymouth last season and have signed three new players from Southampton which made them a much tougher prospect.

Despite this, Weymouth got off to a good start, strong service receive from Tom Allen, Elliott Sawyer and Liam Tewkesbury and serving from Sam Groom led to Weymouth’s attack, particularly from Ian Denslow and Darren Harding being able to dominate Urbond and Weymouth led throughout the set to win 25-17

The second set saw Urbond come back strongly and play much more like Weymouth had expected. Urbond’s block and service gave Weymouth problems and the set went point for point.

However, a couple of strong blocks from Ryan Stout and middle hits from Mike Powell at the crucial moments allowed Weymouth to take the set 25-23 for a 2-0 lead.

The third set saw Urbond at their strongest and Weymouth had little answer to Urbond’s strategic serving which meant Weymouth could not really get their attack going as Urbond raced to a 16-9 lead.

At this point, Weymouth started to go up a gear and worked hard to get back in the match but Urbond were just able to hold on to their lead to win the set 25-23.

The fourth set saw Weymouth up their game and managed to adapt to cope with Urbond’s

service and took an early lead and for the rest of the set two of the most experienced Weymouth players, Allen and Valdis Baranovs, looked unstoppable in attack and Weymouth dominated to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

Weymouth now go on their travels for the first time this season this weekend when they play away to New Forest and Newmarket.
