DORCHESTER Rugby Club are looking forward to a bumper weekend with all three senior men teams in action.

Following last weekend’s hard-earned bonus point win away to Dorset Dockers, tomorrow’s Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts One South opponents are Lytchett Minster.

Coach Martin Oxland’s team will be looking to put on a strong performance for the Coburg Road faithful and get the first home points of the campaign.

First-team captain James Newsam was rightfully proud of his side last weekend and encouraged all to keep pushing for places at training and commended the players for keeping to the game plan laid out by the coaching team.

Reflecting on the game and looking forward to this week’s match, Oxland said: “Saturday was a positive first outing against a side that posed a threat in open play which provided a good test of our defence throughout the match.

“It was great to see the players trying to implement the things we’ve been working on in training and at times having the impact on the opposition we’re looking for.”

Mentioning the debutants, George Howell and Josh Satur, Oxland added: “One of the most pleasing things to witness was the performance of the two newly capped first XV players who have come from playing Colts rugby and, those players who had been challenged to play in different positions from their personal preference or experience.

“This week minor changes have been made with call ups for Charlie Sharpe and Jake Bosher, they move on to the bench with good availability allowing us to keep the main core of the side that started last week.”

Matt Fry’s A XV fell foul of a late cry off by their opponents and will be desperate to start their Dorset & Wilts Two South campaign with a win on the road.

Fry had a strong squad named for the match including the hard-tackling James Franzen and hooker Josh Ovey.

Their opponents, Wheatsheaf Cabin Boys, had their game cancelled last time out and will no doubt be keen to make their mark on the league table also.

Dorchester’s Gladiators XV are due to take to the field in their first game of the season tonight in a local friendly having had their Merit table game against Lytchett Seconds cancelled.

Captain Tony O’Connell will again lead this heady combination of youth and vast experience in fun-filled rugby for the season.

Sunday is junior rugby day, with the under-11s and under-14s welcoming teams from Exeter Saracens and Blandford respectively whilst the Colts, following on from their big win against Salisbury two weeks ago, take on Sherborne in the afternoon.

The club is holding their junior rugby registration and will also be screening the England versus Tonga World Cup game at 11.15am on Sunday in the clubhouse on the big screen.
