WEYMOUTH got off to a winning start in the National Cup to set up a huge tie in the second round against Super League and National champions IBB Polonia.

Saturday saw the start of Weymouth’s indoor season in a cup clash versus New Forest VC.

The Seasiders got off to a good start in the match after taking an early lead with an imposing spike from Sam Groom and good serving from Ryan Stout.

Following Weymouth’s good start both teams traded points throughout the set with the Seasiders slowly pulling away.

They did faulter at times and struggled to receive serve losing clusters of points but this was not enough to stop them taking the first set 25-22.

As the teams changed ends, Weymouth knew they had to improve their service receive if they were to continue their winning ways.

Fortunately, they were able to do this and, combined with some organised back court play, the Seasiders took an early lead.

Part way through the second set the side made some changes through the middle introducing Mike Powell and Ian Denslow to the game.

The good form continued and Weymouth took the second set 25-15.

In the third set, New Forest seemed defeated and Weymouth took a commanding lead, following a long run of serves from Liam Tewkesbury.

All aspects of the local side’s game seemed to come together and it was 24-9 in no time at all.

It took four attempts to finish the match off but finally Tom Allen hit a winning spike and Weymouth closed the game out 25-12 (3-0).

This victory lines up a mouth-watering second round tie with national champions and English Volleyball’s biggest side, IBB Polonia. It promises to be a huge day for the club.

This Saturday, Weymouth host Richmond in their first Division Two fixture following promotion last season, first serve 2.45pm.
