CHICKERELL UNITED 1

BROADSTONE FC SENIORS 0

CHICKERELL United claimed a very well-fought victory over Dorset Senior League strugglers Broadstone thanks to an early improvised strike from Nick Etherington.

Chickerell came out of the traps quickly, and grabbed the early goal through Etherington.

From then on however, the two teams cancelled each other out well.

It was close, and well-fought, but it led to few chances, with both defences having the upper hand for much of the contest.

Etherington’s goal came after five minutes.

Chickerell won the ball back 20 yards out from the Broadstone goal and the ball was flicked through to Etherington, who improvised an effort from just inside the box into the top corner.

From then on however, Broadstone fought back and proved a good match for the Chickens.

Chickerell maintained their lead going into half-time, where Chickens’ boss Shaun Murphy told his side to keep doing what they were doing.

Chickerell did just that and continued to hold off Broadstone.

However, despite these efforts Broadstone nearly grabbed a late equaliser.

At the end, Chickerell had an attack, went for goal and Broadstone countered.

Seniors quickly got down the other end and hit a great strike that just went past Chickerell goalkeeper Ian Bickerstaff’s post.

However, Chickerell held on to halt a run of two consecutive defeats.

Murphy admitted it was a satisfying win, but praised Broadstone, saying that their current league position, 12th out of 13 teams, does not suit them.

Murphy said: “It was a very satisfying 1-0 win I would say. It was not an easy game that is for sure, it was a very tough game, they have always given us a hard game.

“They are a decent set up to be fair, I do not think the position they are in the league is a fair position for them if I am honest, they must have had a few problems along the way.

“I don’t think we have ever had a 1-0 win if I am honest so a 1-0 win is very satisfying, I’m an Arsenal fan so a 1-0 win is very, very satisfying, an old school scoreline.”
