DORCHESTER Town boss Callum Brooks was highly satisfied with the Magpies’ 4-1 Evo-Stik Southern Premier South win over Basingstoke Town at the Clayson Stadium.

Brooks watched on as a clinical Aaron Rodriguez brace sandwiched a Callum Rose own goal before Ben Seymour coolly converted a penalty and tucked away a late tap-in to secure all three points.

Consequently, Dorchester are unbeaten in four league games, winning their last two, and have cemented their standing in 15th, five points above Gosport in the first relegation position.

Speaking to Echosport, Brooks labelled the victory a “good afternoon” for the club.

He said: “I don’t think it could have gone much better. To be honest I thought we were unfortunate not to be ahead at half-time.

“It was just about maintaining that belief, creating chances and taking one in the second half – as it happened we got a couple more so it’s another good afternoon.

“I thought it was another performance where we were really bright. The chances, especially in the first half, they weren’t chances given to us.

“We had to work really hard and it took proper quality to break their back line down. I thought we played with a real good quality going forward and a good mentality when we haven’t got the ball.

“We were nice and disciplined as well, so it was a good performance.”

Brooks also gave man-of-the-match Rodriguez merit for his brace, highlighting the winger’s “quality” first strike.

He said: “If you’re going to win games, I don’t think it’s just about your starting XI. I just see the group as one with different sides going into different games.

“This week we had Tom (Blair) suspended and Winnie (Luke Winsper) picked up a knock at Merthyr, so that’s taken out of your hands.

“For me, it’s a case of OK, Tom’s suspended, Aaron goes in. It might be that Aaron stays in a while now, it’s not 11 and five to me. It’s the whole group, it’s seamless.

“I’ve seen Aaron in training, I’ve seen him in the past so I know he’s got serious quality.

“I know his confidence can dip a bit so I had a chat with him Thursday night, just letting him know he’s got my total support and to play with freedom in the final third.

“Then his first goal – one minute he’s got his back to goal with a defender behind him and next minute he’s in and scored. I just applauded – it was a proper bit of quality.”

With Basingstoke having made two attacking substitutions at 2-1 down and still in the game, Brooks felt scoring a third goal was crucial.

“Getting the third was key,” he said. “You’ve got to be able to see out rough periods. Merthyr had one on Tuesday night and I thought we showed great resilience in that time, then the third goal killed it.

“(Against Basingstoke) we weren’t under that type of pressure but teams will always have spells. If your heads are going to drop every time a team has a spell you’re going to find it hard.

“It’s about accepting teams are having a spell, these are our tools to counter against that, we dig in, work hard, are organised, you come through it and then you’ve got your platform.

“You can see the quality we’ve got going forward and I do fancy us to create chances every game. If you’re doing that, you’ve got half a chance.”
