RAY Cody of Park District A showed up the young pretenders of Budmouth A to secure a maximum in their 22-22 draw in Division One of the Weymouth & District League.

Cody first sneaked past Moses Lewis (8) 3-2 after letting a two-set lead slip before coming from a set down to beat Josh Clark (7) and then steamrollered Nathan Calton (6) 3-0. Five of the nine singles matches went the distance, with Cody the only Park player to win.

Going to the doubles, Park were 19-21 down but Cody teamed up with Luke Hunt (6), who had lost three of those five setters, to win the doubles 3-1 and claim a great draw.

Never say die was the theme right through the match between Preston B and Red Triangle.

This was apparent from the first game where Red Triangle’s Mike Spracklen (9) found himself two sets down against Roger Lovell (7) but fought back to win 3-2.

Preston’s Miranda Edwardes (5) found herself in the same position and took Shaun Beauchamp (7) to five sets before losing out.

Terry Whitworth (3) and Lovell then led a Preston revival winning their next matches but then Edwardes and Lovell lost in really tense five setters.

With the time fast approaching 11.00pm the doubles match between Edwardes/Whitworth and Spracklen/Beauchamp finished the match as it began with the home side finding themselves 2-0 down but battling back to win 3-2. Red Triangle ran out 25-18 winners in a really close but enjoyable match.

Division Two started with Shipton Gorge C securing a 25-16 win over Colliton C, but after the first round of games the Colliton team seemed to be taking the upper hand until Shipton got into their stride they became increasingly strong, winning six of the last seven matches.

Shipton’s Dan Corren was the strongest player overall gaining all nine points through a good variety of serves, consistency and a winning backhand drive.

Jim Chamberlain was Colliton’s strongest player gaining six points and while at times he seemed unbeatable with his close up fast back and forehand drives his consistency was his undoing. Both Andy Ray (4) and Pete Loakes (5) also played some solid table tennis but were ultimately just out played by a more consistent opponent.

Jess Moggeridge (9) and her All Saints A teammates, Ollie James (4) and Richard Wood (9) picked up a 23-14 win over Preston A. Both Eddie Chapman and Thierry Roy picked up four points a piece for Preston with Derrick Shilladay three.

Jaimee Browne (3) came from 2-1 down in her match against Stuart Walden (8) to win 11-7 in the decider but it was in vain as Budmouth C lost 29-9 to Wyke A.

Her sister, Ashleigh (4), lost out by the same score twice to both Tony Dobbs (9) and Roger Walden (9) in a night where the girls fought hard but ultimately lost out to an experienced Wyke team.

Wey Valley and Preston E fought out a classic at the Springfield club with the latter just pipping their opponents in the final doubles match to score a 21-20 win. Richard Lane picked up a maximum despite being on the losing team, a fate that also befell Jean Baker, who also picked up a maximum but saw himself on the losing team, this time it was Wyke C losing to the talented girls from Budmouth E 24-12.

Springfield D and Budmouth D fought another highly entertaining match of table tennis with some outstanding and exciting games – the former snatching a 20-19 win.

Preston D completed a straightforward 30-1 win over Park District Y with William Roper the only Park District player to pick up a point, against Heather Merritt.
