WEYMOUTH captain Jake McCarthy admitted ‘It just wasn’t our night’ as his side fell 3-1 at home to Gosport Borough on Tuesday.

The defeat was the Terras’ first at home in the league for 411 days, which was sealed by goals from Craig McAllister, Sam Lanahan and Ryan Pennery.

McCarthy said: “We are obviously disappointed after our unbeaten run (in the league) at home for over a year has come to an end but we probably deserved not to win the game.

“They had a couple of lucky breaks, it just wasn’t our night.”

The Terras had been dominating the second half, with the game finely poised at 1-1, with Yemi Odubade having equalised in the first half for Weymouth, before ex-Magpie Lanahan put Gosport back in front.

McCarthy said: “Before the second goal goes in you think ‘oh the momentum is there and the next goal is huge’ and when they get the second goal it is a bit of a hit to you and you have just got to try and regroup again and then try to manage to get one back.”

McCarthy is now hoping Weymouth can immediately react to the loss, when they host Needham Market in the first round of the FA Trophy today (3pm).

McCarthy also revealed that after the match boss Mark Molesley had pointed to last season for inspiration in trying to react to the disappointing defeat.

McCarthy said: “When the third one went in it was tough but like Molesley was saying (in the changing room) we always reacted well last year and we have just got to go again (today, against Needham Market).

“The games are coming thick and fast now so we have just got to react.”

Speaking about the home run in the league coming to an end, McCarthy said that it is the ability to react to losses which define your season.

McCarthy said: “The boys have been great , they have done really well here.

“It is a hard place to come but everything is going to come to an end, like a few of the boys were saying, all of the big teams in the Premier League lose games it is just how you react then after that which defines your season.”

McCarthy reiterated that Weymouth cannot let the games against the lower teams define their season, and emphasised a need to progress through to the second round of the FA Trophy today against Needham Market (3pm).

Two of Weymouth’s three league losses so far this season have come against teams in the lower half of the table, with the other loss, a 4-3 defeat at Farnborough, against a side currently mid table.

McCarthy said: “We cannot let these games against the lower teams define our season, so we just need to kick on and progress (against Needham Market) and then move on to the league.”

Finally, McCarthy admitted that it will be nice to get away from the league for a game against Needham Market.

McCarthy said: “It is good, we have had a lot of games recently, and especially after a loss in the league it is good to go away from the league and hopefully get through in the cup which will be a good game hopefully."
