THANKS to our eagle-eyed friends at Bridport Museum for pointing out in the paddle steamer story in the December 12 edition that there was an error in the captions.
They tell us the ‘Victoria’, which regularly visited harbours along this coast, had only one funnel.
Two of the images, right and left were of a much larger paddle steamer with two funnels.
Assistant curator Margaret Milree said: “We have identified this larger paddle steamer as the ‘Brighton’ built for the London Brighton & South Coast Railway Company in 1878 by John Elder & Co. of Govan. “She was acquired by Pocketts Bristol Channel Steam Packet Company in 1896 and operated out of Swansea for 19 years after which she was requisitioned for war service in 1915.
“Later she operated in the Aegean for a Turkish company and was broken up there in 1927.
“We have researcher in at the moment who has been researching ships in and out of Lyme and he has no record of the large paddle steamer ‘Brighton’ visiting Lyme.”
