SUMMER would not be complete without carnival.

Bridport Carnival will go ahead this year and visitors will be able to enjoy all the usual favourites.

The carnival procession is due to take place on Saturday, August 18, followed by the torchlight parade on Sunday, August 19. Carnival-goers will then be able to head down to West Bay to enjoy the traditional fireworks display while a bonfire is lit on the beach.

There will be lots to keep visitors entertained in the week leading up to the parade, with quizzes, bingo, skittles and darts events being held at various locations in the town.

A teddy bears picnic and family disco will keep the little ones happy, and a Carnival Princess will be crowned after the procession. Musicians have already been booked for both evenings.

Started in 1971, Bridport Carnival has been a firm favourite on the town's calendar ever since and is said to be the town's biggest, free event.

Chairman of the carnival committee, Shaun Fox, has been involved in carnival for more than 40 years. He said: "People can expect the usual favourites and in the lead-up to the weekend and then we will have the parade and torchlight procession. Carnival is always well-attended and Bridport in particular, I think, is known for its community spirit. There's a good atmosphere."

Organisers are hoping everyone will get involved this year - and there are many ways to do so.

The Bridport Carnival committee is looking for help on its board. The voluntary role would involve monthly meetings in the lead-up to the big event and helping out when it arrives.

Volunteers are needed to help co-ordinate the procession and float and walking entries are needed for the procession. Schools, clubs and individuals are encouraged to get involved and take part.

Each year, funds raised through Bridport Carnival are handed out to a range of good causes.
