An urgent road closure has been put in place in order for a gas distribution company relaying a pipe.

Pound Road has been closed as Southern Gas Networks undertakes the work and it is expected that it will be closed from today (Tuesday, April 23) until Thursday, April 25.

Waseem Hanif, a spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said: "We’re relaying a gas service pipe in Pound Road, Lyme Regis, to improve gas pressure for our customers.

"Due to the location of our gas main and the narrowness of the road, we needed to close Pound Road to complete our work safely.

"Signed diversions are in place and access is being maintained for residents.

"All going well, we hope to complete our work, restore the road surface to the required specifications and reopen Pound Road as normal on Thursday, April 25.

"We’d like to thank everyone affected for your patience and support."

However, the road could remain closed until Monday, April 29, according to Lyme Regis Town Council.

The town council released a statement regarding the road closure.

A spokesperson for the town council said: "We have just been notified by Southern Gas Networks of an urgent closure on Pound Road, Lyme Regis.

"The works are expected to be completed by April 29, 2024

"If there are any further updates, we will of course let you know."
