Members of a church group in Bridport have installed a life saving device on the outside of their church wall.

The Bridport Christian Fellowship has placed a defibrillator in East Street car park to allow anyone who may need it access.

It was installed in mid-February and opened by the town’s mayor David Bolwell, thanks to money left to the church from one of its congregation members who sadly passed away.

Judy Robinson- Martin suffered a heart attack and the church thought it was a ‘fitting’ way to honour her and give something back to the community.

Senior elder at the church, David Collins, told the News why they decided to use the money left by Judy in her will.

He said: “it was a decision taken after one of our ladies who passed away left us some money in her will, and we thought, 'what do you do? Use it just for day-to-day stuff or something to remember her and benefit the community'.

“She was a member of the congregation for a number of years and this was just an opportunity to do good for community – the mayor was only to happy to come so people in community know there is a defibrillator in East Street car park.

“It’s good that people know it’s there. I hope it never has to be used but if it does it’s there for the community.”

Another defibrillator was installed at a sheltered housing in the town centre in November.

Residents at Vernon's Court, just off South Street, had fought an "18-month battle" with housing association Magna to have a defibrillator installed at the site.

There is also a defibrillator installed at the Town Hall.

Anyone who needs to the use the defibrillator can simply call 999 and request a code to unlock the device from the ambulance service.
