A local water polo club has new equipment thanks to hundreds of pounds donated by a fundraising group.

The Bridport Round Table donated just over £400 to the Bridport Barracudas Polo Club so it can buy new balls and hats.

The sport has a long history in Bridport stretching back to 1898, and being reformed at Bridport Leisure Centre in 1994. The club now boasts more than 25 players.

With the club having struggled during Covid-19, it is now looking to resurrect its competitive junior matches.

Bridport Round Table secretary, Kevin Bacon, said: “Donations like these are ones which we thoroughly enjoy making; they benefit large groups of people in circumstances where the funding for these less mainstream sports and community clubs is less readily available through conventional sources.

"I think this is particularly importance during these difficult times where the value of recreational activities can easily be overlooked in the face of more pressing matters of necessity. We are very much looking forward to seeing the club recover fully from Covid-19, and to seeing it excel in the competitive arena.”

The club trains to participate in the Dorset Water Polo League, Swim England South West Championships, friendly matches and tournaments, with the club encouraging members to progress along the sporting pathway at county, regional and national levels.

The club runs sessions for ages 4-7, 7-11 and 12-5 on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Those interested are invited to drop in at the leisure centre.
