West Dorset is again on flood alert.

As heavy rain continues to hit the county, the Environment Agency has issued a flood alert covering Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, West Bay, Bothenhampton, Burton Freshwater, Burton Bradstock, Cogden Beach, Chesil Beach, West Fleet, East Fleet and Chiswell.

The alert covers high tide just after 9.30pm on New Year’s Eve and will be updated on New Year’s Day.

River levels are expected to rise across the county as rain continues.

The latest flood alerts cover: Rivers Lim, Char, Winniford, Simene, Brit, Asker, Mangerton and Bride.

The River Axe (Upper) had been issued with a flood warning, meaning flooding expected, however the Environment Agency updated this to an alert, meaning flooding is ‘possible’.

Flood alerts have also been issued for the River Piddle, Frome (Lower), and Axe (Lower), meaning flooding in these areas is also 'possible'.

The flood warning in place for West Bay comes as a result of high tide forecast at around 8.39pm.

Areas most at risk include properties along and behind the Esplanade.

Localised standing water may affect the roads between the Parkdean Holiday Park and West Bay Road.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "River levels are rising steadily.

"We will continue to monitor levels closely.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water."
