THREE nature ponds are to be created at the Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve at Toller Porcorum.

Dorset Wildlife Trust has been granted planning consent to create the ponds to encourage Great Crested Newts, a protected species, already found on the reserve.

Natural England has agreed to the project for the reserve land, which is partially listed as a site of special scientific interest and special conservation area. The works will be funded by DEFRA as part of their Species Recovery Project.

One of the ponds will be created close to Pound Cottage adjacent to the River Hooke, the other two close to each other off Kingcombe Road.

Each will be about 10 metres across and roughly circular to a maximum depth of 1.2metres with each having a surface area of no more than 100square metres.
