Two special benches which were installed to improve wheelchair access at the beach fell victim to Storm Ciaran.

But in an overwhelming show of support, the community rallied round to raise more than £2,000 in under seven hours to replace them.

Photographer Neil Barnes, from Bridport, has long fought to improve wheelchair access at the coast. Inspired by his daughter Lucy, he campaigned for five years to buy four benches which were placed at Hive Beach and West Bay.

Unfortunately, the two benches at Burton Bradstock were severely damaged by last week's storm.

Neil launched a crowdfunder yesterday in a bid to raise £2,000 to replace the benches and was blown away by the response.

"What a kind and generous lot you are," he said of those who donated. "Thank you so much. I can’t believe how quickly we met the target - under seven hours and over £2,000 raised - incredible."

Neil's efforts to ensure everyone can enjoy the coast continue. As reported in the News, a specially-designed carrier was introduced at West Bay just last month.

It means wheelchairs can be placed on to the carrier, then wheeled across the beach.

Neil said the new carrier was 'a dream come true' for him and Lucy.
