WE delve into the archives of the Bridport News once again where we take in Haddon House at West Bay.

A report from the pages of the January 5, 1940, edition of the paper is on labourer Hugh Mossop, who admitted breaking and entering the Regency style house.

Alongside this our archives have delivered some photos with a Haddon House connection - with one even showing a Class of 1939 at the resort.

BRIDPORT CHARGE

Mr E.R. Sykes, Chairman, presiding. Hugh Mossop (33), described as a labourer, came for trial from the Bridport Court on a charge of breaking and entering Haddon House, West Bay-Road, Bridport, with intent to steal.

He pleaded guilty.

Mr G.A. Forrest, prosecuting, said accused came to Bridport from Lyme Regis and did some work, but was unable to find lodgings.

He was hungry and fed up and committed the offence.

He put his hand into a pantry window, forcing its zinc shutters, but hearing a noise he did nothing more and he did not steal anything.

Detective-Constable Rushen (Bridport) gave accused's record.

Sentencing the accused to one day's imprisonment, the Chairman said: "We want to give you a chance. Don't do this sort of thing again."
