A major route in and out of Bridport will close overnight for nearly two weeks while maintenance work is carried out.

Part of the B3162 in North Allington will shut from 8pm to 6am every night from November 30 until December 9, except for weekends.

The stretch of road affected will run from West Street up to Hospital Lane and will see Dorset Council undertake essential resurfacing work to the road.

A Dorset Council spokesperson said:  “This resurfacing work is part of our annual programme of work around the Dorset Council area to maintain roads near or at the end of their life.

“We are writing to all households along the closure, detailing the arrangements. Access to properties will be maintained, although householders may be asked to wait a moment while machinery is moved or a task is finished.

"Our onsite crew will be able to help residents with any questions or concerns they may have.

"Overnight parking will be restricted to enable the works to be completed quickly and safely."

Temporary parking restrictions will be put in place to prevent waiting or parking on the road and vehicles may be removed under  the provisions of the Removal and Disposal of Vehicles Regulations.

They added: “Diversions will be signposted, with drivers diverted onto the same classification of road as the one closed for maintenance, although local drivers of smaller vehicles may choose a route suitable for their vehicle.

“We thank everyone for their patience as we continue to maintain Dorset’s roads.”

The suggested alternative route will take drivers along the A3066 to Beaminster before heading across to Broadwindsor and back down the B3162.

National regulations state roads must be diverted onto roads with the same classification and will remain in place for the duration of the works.
