Emergency services rushed to reports of a young woman in distress in the sea at a west Dorset beach late at night.

Coastguard teams from West Bay and Lyme Regis were called to a young female in distress at Charmouth Beach at 11.32 pm on Tuesday, October 10.

The casualty was located and rescued by coastguard swimmers.

She was stretchered off the beach and passed into the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesperson for Lyme Regis Coastguard said: "We were tasked alongside West Bay Coastguard, Lyme Regis Lifeboat and Dorset Police to a young female in distress at Charmouth Beach.

"The casualty was located and rescued by Coastguard rescue swimmers.

"Casualty was then stretchered off the beach and passed into the care of South Western Ambulance Service."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We received a report at 11.23 pm on Tuesday, October 10 raising concern for the welfare of a woman in the sea at Charmouth beach.

"Officers attended with HM Coastguard, RNLI and the ambulance service.

"The woman was brought to safety at around 12.15am on Wednesday, October 11, and taken to receive the appropriate care."
