A blooming good festival is set to take place this August bank holiday weekend celebrating all things flowers.

Abbey Farm in Abbotsbury are hosting their first ever Flower Festival, taking place on August 26-28 from 10am-4pm.

Penny Callaghan, owner of From My Mother’s Garden said: “We decided to create this event because as a collection of artistic businesses, flowers and nature is a common theme.

“Add to this the famous Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens, the Swannery and the flower wreath traditions, it made it a natural event to host in the village.”

Around 30 stalls and studios will be present at the event, set-up by makers who create art and crafts inspired by nature.

There will also be talks, walks and workshops to take part in as well as a flower trail for children.

Organisers explained that the flower festival is a nod to Abbotsbury’s tradition when the local children carried flower and greenery covered garlands around the village in order to collect money for charity, before they placed them at the War Memorial in the churchyard - In the past the garlands used to be cast out to sea.

Viaitors are encouraged to dress in floral prints and for those who want to get a little more creative, there will be an award for the most outstanding flower-inspired outfit.

They said: “We would love as many people as possible to get into the spirit of the event and dress in floral clothes, hats, corsages, fascinators and perhaps any four-legged friends might also join in.”

Refreshments will be available from Cherries Café with a flower and herb themed menu.

Abbey Farm is set around the large Medieval Abbey Barn and is home to Cherries Café, Abbey Farm Flowers, From My Mother’s Garden, Clare Hawkes Fine Art, Duir Crafts and Make & Mend.

Abbey Barn will be open on the day for visitors to view, following some recently completed improvement works.

Parking is available at Abbotsbury Village Carpark which is a short walk from the venue.

The three-day event is free to attend and many of the talks are free, whilst some workshops and walks have costs starting from £8.
