Two passengers were rescued from a plane after it made an emergency landing ending up in a river.

Bridport firefighters were called at around 1.58 pm on Tuesday, August 1 to the Seaton area in East Devon after a mayday call from a light aircraft.

They were joined by police and ambulance crews, alongside fire crews from Seaton, Exmouth, Colyton, Yeovil and Middlemoor.

Further information came in that the passengers were out of the plane but stuck in the water and unsure of their exact location.

A military helicopter picked up their mayday call and hovered above the crash site.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews confirmed that both passengers were out of the aircraft un-injured but were unable to exit from the plane due to being stuck on the river bank.

Crews managed to get life jackets to the two passengers and made the scene safe whilst also setting up downstream protection.

Environmental Protection was called due to concerns over possible fuel and oil leaks into the river.

The two passengers were handed over to the ambulance service to be checked over.

It was later confirmed that no fuel or oil had leaked into the river.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: "Bridport’s 4x4 appliance was mobilised along with Seaton Fire Station, Colyton Fire Station, Yeovil Fire Station, Middlemoor Fire Station, Exmouth Fire Station, supporting officers, police and ambulance to the Seaton area following a mayday call from a light aircraft.

"Once in attendance crews confirmed that both passengers were out of the aircraft un-injured but unable to exit from the plane due to the river bank.

"Crews managed to get life jackets to the two passengers and made the scene safe whilst also setting up down stream protection.

"An Environmental Protection Unit was requested as a precaution as there was concern over fuel and oil leaking into the river.

"Bridport’s 4x4 appliance was deployed to the opposite side of the river and crews managed to safely extract the two passengers unharmed using a triple extension ladder.

"Crews confirmed no fuel or oil had leaked into the river.

"The incident was then handed over to the aircraft’s recovery team."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Fire control received a call from Exeter Airport Air Traffic Control reporting a light aircraft having to make an emergency landing in the area of Seaton. 

"Fire control immediately mobilised one fire appliance from Seaton, one fire appliance from Colyton, the rescue tender from Yeovil, a 4x4 appliance from Bridport and two duty officers to attend this incident. 

"With the help from a military helicopter and What 3 Words fire control were able to get the exact location of the aircraft which was located in Musbury.

"The aircraft had made an emergency landing into the river axe.

"Two people climbed out of the aircraft and needed rescuing from the wing of the aircraft.

"Due to the aircraft being in water fire control mobilised the specialist rescue team from Exmouth to assist at the incident. 

"Ambulance and Police arrived promptly on scene to assist the fire crews. 

"The incident commander confirmed that the two person were not seriously injured and needed assisting off the aircraft situated in the river. 

"Due to the aircraft being in the river the incident commander requested the environmental protection unit from Taunton to attend this incident. 

"The crews got to work rescuing the two persons from the aircraft using one triple extension ladder and water rescue equipment.

"In addition the crews monitored the water for any potential contaminants leaks into the river. 

"The incident commander confirmed that the two persons were promptly rescued from the aircraft and handed to the ambulance service for precautionary checks. The incident was handed over to the police and the flying club."
