The much-loved raft race returned to the River Brit last night and was just as fun and chaotic as ever.

Eighteen creative rafts crafted by local businesses took to the water at West Bay, where crews battled it out for first place at the annual fundraiser by Bridport RNLI.

First home was Just Jammin by The Cherry Tree and runners up were The Game Boys.

Just Jammin were awarded the Eric Hamblett trophy for first place by none other than Mr Hamblett's grandson, Ben Peek.

It was a special moment for Mr Peek, whose grandad passed away before he was born, as it was the first time he'd been involved with the competition.

"My grandad was the harbourmaster for a few years and everyone knew him," said Mr Peek. "It's really nice to be involved and handing out his trophy."

The Best Dressed went to Porter Dodson and Most Entertaining was awarded to the Round Table's Fjord Escort.

Bridmet won Top Sponsorship thanks to raft Brid Metallica. They raised £745 for the charity.

The annual raft race is a one of the biggest fundraisers for the local branch and, although donation buckets are still being counted up, organisers were pleased with how much was raised for the charity.

Bridport RNLI's Annie Taylor said: "We're very pleased with the turnout this year - we have more rafts than last year at 18 up from 15.

"From sponsorshop alone we have raised more than £2,000 and are still counting the buckets. It's so important as it helps save lives at sea."

Fellow RNLI member Sadie Miles said: "This year's race has gone very well. Every year I am always amazed by the the turnout and the effort people go. I would like to thank everyone for their generosity."

Bridport mayor Cllr Dave Bolwell said: "This is the best turnout I have seen - which is great as it's for such a good cause.

"The rafts are so creative and it really do capture the imagination.

"It's great to see so many people here supporting the RNLI, locals and holidaymakers, as that support is so important. I'd like to thank everyone for putting the effort into making the raft and all those who came down to show their support for this great event. We all got very wet!"
