The science of plants will be brought to life in a Lyme Regis talk.

‘Around the World in 80 Plants’ is a talk to be given by Professor Jonathan Drori CBE, which will see him bring to life the science of plants by revealing how their worlds are intricately entwined with our own history, culture and folklore on Wednesday, April 26 at Uplyme Village Hall.

Professor Drori is a trustee of The Eden Project, ambassador for the WWF and previously, a trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and The Woodland Trust, as well as being a former executive producer for more than 50 popular BBC TV series on science and technology.

The talk, hosted by the Uplyme and Lyme Regis Horticultural Society, will take the audience on a journey of discovery as they learn that each plant's story is ‘full of surprises,’ from the seemingly familiar tomato and dandelion to the eerie mandrake and Spanish ‘moss’ of Louisiana, by way of lotus, nutmeg and the obscure iboga.

The talk follows Professor Drori’s book of the same name, Around the World in 80 Plants which is a companion volume to his previous literary work of ‘Around the World in 80 Trees,’ a bestseller now in 19 languages.

The event will be preceded by the chairman’s competition for best stem/vase of spring flowers from bulbs, corms or tubers and entries must be in place by 7.15pm for judging.

Doors open for refreshments at 7pm and the talk starts 7.30pm with free entry to members and £3 for non-members.
