A man has been landed with a court bill of more than £1,000 after three driving offences were found proven.

Benjamin Jon Furnell, whose address was given as Happy Island Way, Bridport, was sentenced at Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, January 24.

On May 31 of last year, Furnell was stopped on East Street, in Bridport, whilst driving a Vauxhall van without the relevant insurance. Police officers also found the van to have an expired MOT certificate as well as a front nearside tyre without the required tread depth.

Furnell, 33, chose not to appear before the court.

Presiding magistrate Keith Wroe imposed a total bill of £1,255.

Furnell was fined £660 for the offence of driving without insurance and issued with six points on his licence; he was fined £220 for driving with an expired MOT certificate; and a further £220 for driving with insufficient tyre tread.

He must also pay a surcharge of £110 to fund victim services and £45 in costs.
