DORSET County Hospital's emergency department is 'incredibly busy' as patients are again advised to visit only if necessary.

The hospital is still under pressure despite stepping down from its critical incident status on Friday, December 30.

In a statement, the hospital said: "Our emergency department is incredibly busy this morning. Help us help you and use the right service.

"If you need medical help, but it is not serious or life-threatening, call 111 first. You can also make use of local Minor Injuries Units."

Elective procedures and outpatients appointments are continuing but are under constant review and patients are advised to attend as planned unless contacted by the hospital.

The hospital added: "As always, we remain committed to providing the best possible care for our patients and we thank you for your support and understanding at this challenging time."

To ease pressures on the hospital the public are advised to call 999 only in an event of a serious or life-threatening emergency.

Those with less serious cases should visit a minor injuries unit or call 111 for medical help.

A list of your local minor injuries unit and its opening times is available on the Dorset Healthcare website at www.dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/miu
