DORSET County Hospital has urged members of the public to visit the emergency department only if their conditions are serious.

The hospital said that it was 'under extreme pressure' on Wednesday, December 28 and reminded patients to use other services for less urgent medical issues.

A statement from Dorset County Hospital Trust said: "Our hospital is currently under extreme pressure.

"Please help us help those who need us most by only visiting the Emergency Department for serious injuries and conditions.

"Other services are available for less urgent medical issues. Thank you."

It follows reports that dental patients in Dorset have been advised to contact their usual practice in event of an emergency.

Moreover, hospitals nationwide have seen a rise of 70% in flu cases while cases of Covid-19 in Dorset County Hospital doubled last week.

The Hospital Trust added:

  • Please do not come to our Emergency Department with minor injuries, as you will face a long wait and will be signposted elsewhere.
  • Please use a different service if your condition is not serious or life-threatening. Wherever possible, use the 111 service, Minor Injuries Units or your local GP surgery. They will make sure you get the right help.
  • If you have a family member waiting to be discharged home or into alternative care, please respond quickly to our calls.
