CROWDS gathered in Bridport to celebrate the return of the annual Christmas Cheer event in the town.

Mayor Ian Bark turned the lights on on the tree at 6 pm, which kickstarted the beautiful festive displays that spread across the streets.

Over 50 stallholders selling various local arts, crafts, local produce, food and drink and much more were dotted around Bridport as well as face painting, free stickers, sweets, free kite making and free balloons.

It was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that the event went ahead restriction-free and the Mayor admitted he was taken aback by the number of people who came out to enjoy the evening despite the ice-cold conditions.

Cllr Ian Bark told the Bridport and Lyme Regis News: "I was really impressed with the number of people despite the cold. It was lovely to see the town celebrating again without the restrictions etc we've had over the two years."

"I was very impressed with the lights on the tree. Later as I walked back from the Millenium green and turned the corner I thought 'blimey they are fantastic!' I was really impressed with it!

"It all looks great the town looks great.

"There was a lot of people out there was a lot of laughter and smiles and that is what Bridport Cheer is all about."

Live music was provided in the form of local schools and the Ukrainian Choir bringing their Christmas carols.

The winner of this year's Christmas card design competition was claimed by Sir John Colfox student Izzy Folett who received a prize fund of £25.
