CREDITON UNITED 1

BRIDPORT 1

BRIDPORT picked up a highly-prized point at Crediton United in their South West Peninsula League Premier East clash at Lords Meadow.

This fixture pitted second against second-bottom, but the Bees played at a level far greater than their low league position suggests.

And given the difference in placing, Bridport might feel the more aggrieved at not having come away with all three points.

However, the Bees took the lead in the 23rd minute through Jack Wright’s first goal for the club.

Will Gape had two other chances for Bridport, first heading off target from inside the six-yard box under pressure and then missing an open goal from 45 yards after home goalkeeper Jack Arthur over-committed.

Crediton duly grabbed an equaliser on the cusp of half-time when Sam Stapleton’s penalty crept through the grasp of the unlucky Jordon Scadding.

Bridport had further opportunities in the second half, with Tom Richardson missing a one-on-one and Sol Ayunga beating Arthur – and the woodwork by inches.

Crediton went down to ten men late on and with Bridport hesitant in chasing a winner, Creddy nearly won it only for Luke King to make a fabulous clearance off the line.

Speaking post-match, Bridport boss Chris Herbst said: “We should’ve won it. I’m not being biased but we outplayed them and created the best chances.

“They went down to ten and we went into our shell a bit, so it’s frustrating. I’d have taken a draw, so now it’s settled I’m happy.

“It wasn’t to be but a great result in the end. It was a good game from us and a momentum builder.”

Bridport have now returned to the bottom of the table after Elburton Villa beat Honiton 1-0 away.

Herbst added: “We’ve got loads of games in hand and I’m confident we’ll be pushing up the league, no drama. I’m not worried.”

Bridport host former leaders Ivybridge Town on Saturday (2.15pm).

Bees: Jo Scadding, Baggs, Wright, King, Childs, Daniels, Handyside, Gape (Thomas 23), Weedon (O Peart 68), Richardson, Ayunga. Subs not used: Grace, Baker.
