Scott Chilton, Dorset Police's chief constable, has been appointed to the same role within Hampshire and Isle of Wight's police force.

The area's police and crime panel has approved the selection of Mr Chilton, who will take over from Olivia Pinkney at the end of February next year.

Mr Chilton began his career in Hampshire and has served as deputy chief constable at Dorset Police since 2020 before being promoted to Chief Constable in the summer of 2021.

Dorset's Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “Now that chief constable Scott Chilton has been confirmed as the next chief for Hampshire Constabulary, I would like to thank him on behalf of Dorset’s communities for his commitment to keeping this county safe.

“Scott has shown strong leadership during his time with Dorset Police, first as deputy chief constable from 2020 and then as chief constable following his promotion last summer.

“I am particularly grateful for his work in implementing Dorset Police’s new vision, ensuring that the Force, the priorities in my Police and Crime Plan and the people are all in alignment.

“I wish Scott all the very best when he leaves Dorset Police in a few months’ time. 

“One of my most important responsibilities is to appoint a new chief constable and I have now started the process to find his replacement. I will work to ensure that the best possible candidate is appointed so that Dorset’s communities receive the policing that they expect and deserve.”

Hampshire's police and crime commissioner, Donna Jones, said: "He is an ambitious officer with an outstanding record who brings with him a wealth of experience."

Mr Chilton said he was honoured to have been chosen.

"It’s a real privilege to be the first home grown Chief Constable in the force where I began my career and to be given the opportunity to lead the dedicated and committed officers, staff and volunteers," he said.

Panel chairman Simon Bound added: "Scott Chilton is an excellent candidate for this position.

"His answers to questions posed by the panel demonstrated that he is very suitable for the role. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will have a new chief constable of very high calibre.”
