Bridport has been a hub of activity for under 18s.

The activities have ranged from drum and bass (dance music) nights to a drawing festival.

One of the most popular events over half term was the 'Amazing Drawing Festival'.

The event was set up by Jo Burlington, a creative artist and youth worker, to offer young people the opportunity to play with artistic materials.

Jo said: “There are no limits to their own creativity. I plan to extend my work with activities to all ages.“

The aim of these events is to give under 18s, who often say ‘there’s nothing to do in Bridport’, something fun to do.

Bridport Youth and Community Centre (BYCC) has been the hub of these activities.

Chairman of the BYCC Trust, Kelvin Clayton said: "It’s important that our young people feel that they are being offered something they want. I hope that these events go some way to achieving that.”

To this point, the events have been carefully supervised by professional security and youth centre staff.

Staff have also ensured that there is minimal disturbance for neighbours by hanging up parachute canopies which helps to muffle the sound.

Meanwhile, the centre is looking to raise funds to soundproof the sports hall in the BYCC. The aim is to make it a multi-purpose hall, for both sporting and leisure activities, in preparation for another drum and bass night in March next year.

Youth centre manager Heather Marston said: “By offering extra activities, as well as holding regular youth clubs, funding bodies who like to see a good range of activities on offer at the centre are more likely to give funds.”

The next activity on the calendar is a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, December 3 from 10am to 4pm. The festive event will have bargains galore from local traders and feature a steel band, a local choir, mulled wine and tombola.
