THESE images are from a silent melodrama about drug smuggling at West Bay.

It's one of many videos made available by charity The Windrose Rural Media Trust capturing Dorset in bygone days.

The film is called Dope Under Thorncombe and was made by talented amateur filmmaker, hairdresser Frank Trevett and his family and friends.

It was set to a new musical score by Rachel Leach in 2009.

Dope Under Thorncombe was shot on 9.5mm film, the amateur’s favourite film choice in the 1930s.

In 1938, Mr Trevett, out of sheer enthusiasm and love of amateur film making, brought Dope Under Thorncombe into being with the help of friends and members of his family.

It is a feisty tale of dope smugglers on the Dorset coast around West Bay, with a handsome hero defending the honour of a beautiful heroine; rough tough gangsters flouting the law; pursuit, kidnap, fisticuffs, gunplay and bodies being thrown from cliffs!

It had always been silent and cried out for music.

Windrose commissioned composer Rachel Leach to create a score to accompany the film. This was performed live at two premieres in the area in which the film was made, to great public acclaim.

Members of Frank Trevett’s family were present as guests of honour.

Windrose is now able to present Dope Under Thorncombe on DVD, complete with the music soundtrack for which it has waited for nearly 80 years.

Windrose is a registered charity. Proceeds from DVD and CD sales go to saving more old films, many of which were put together by keen amateur filmmakers from years gone by, providing a fascinating glimpse into the region’s social history.

DVDs cost £10 and CDs £5, including postage and packing. Orders should be sent to Windrose Rural Media Trust, Corner Cottage, Brickyard Lane, Bourton, Gillingham, Dorset, SP8 5PJ.
