A school is celebrating the achievements of its students - including a pupil who won a national prize for her reporting skills.

Beaminster School held its Senior Presentation Evening celebrating more than 100 students and their successes over the past year.

Additionally, the school is congratulating year 9 student Isla Sibley, 12, who won the national BBC Young Reporter of the Year competition.

She recently featured on CBBC Newsround and was interviewed by presenter Shanequa Paris.

Isla won the competition with her article about the anxiety she felt during the Covid lockdown, titled 'How chickens help me cope with anxiety’.

Isla told Newsround: "They were just so funny and adorable that I could just enjoy them without having to think of all the other stuff."

A spokesperson for Beaminster School said: "What an achievement, well done Isla, we're very proud of you."

Meanwhile, more than 100 awards were presented to year 10-13 Beaminster School students for excellence, progress, and effort in their respective subject areas, as well as a range of other awards celebrating the wider life of the school and community. The evening was accompanied by musical performances by Sam Chassar-Hesketh and another by Amelie Bailey, Bethany Still and Betty Wyatt.

Heads of department read out comments about each student as they went up to collect their certificates from the headteacher Keith Hales or the Chair of Governors Bridget Millwood.

Most of the year 13 students have moved on from Beaminster now and gone on to start careers, attend university or take a gap year and so were not in attendance.

These include the winner of the Governors’ Award for outstanding improvement and effort, Jack Ridout, who is studying Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace at the University of Southampton, and the winner of the Head's Award for outstanding academic excellence and achievement, Finlay Williams, who is studying Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

Headteacher Keith Hales said: “It was a real pleasure to, once again, welcome so many parents and carers to our annual Presentation Evening on Thursday, October 6 where we celebrated the diverse talents and achievements of our upper school students from the past year.

"With over 100 awards given out, I was particularly taken by the many personal and heartfelt comments from staff for all the very worthy award winners; it reminded me how fortunate we are to have such positive relationships in school alongside the strong support from home.”
