A gathering was held at Millennium Green to mark the start of Bridport’s Great Big Green Week.

Stalls offering energy advice and know-how on making bird boxes were set up on the green and two bands entertained the crowds.

Scott Morrison, of West Dorset Friends of the Earth, said: "The “eco group” from St Mary's Primary were on hand to add their knowledge and enthusiasm.

"Bridport Mayor Ian Bark gave a speech reminding people that the wisdom of science has given us solutions to the many problems besetting our planet, but that what is lacking is delivery.

"We are simply not putting these solutions into practice fast enough."

The Great Big Green Week continued until October 2 with events on offer including learning how to monitor a river, visiting a beaver’s lair, a river clean up, and walks.

Organisers say the events offer an enjoyable way to take part in some serious subjects.

At the weekend people took part in West Dorset Friends of the Earth’s slow ride through the town centre, promoting the idea that cycling can be fun and safe.

Also on Saturday, Bridport Green Energy Champions were outside Londis, Skilling, from 10am to 1pm.

Across the weekend there were more than 50 homes open to visitors showing greener ways of living. People could find out how to upgrade their home, or simply save energy, by visiting households that have taken the first steps. Details will be available at www.dorset.greenopenhomes.net

There was also a paddle and clean of the lower River Brit and an end of week Splash in the Sea at West Bay.
