A man in his 60s had to be taken to hospital after being bitten by a dog in Bridport.

He sustained injuries to both legs which subsequently resulted in an infection, police said.

The man was walking his Pomeranian dog on St Mary's Field in the town when he was approached by a man with a large German Shepherd dog on a lead.

As the German Shepherd came past it snapped at the victim’s dog so he picked it up.

The German Shepherd then continued to go for the Pomeranian, before starting to attack the victim and biting both of his legs.

The owner of the German Shepherd left the scene without giving his details.

The victim attended hospital for treatment to his injuries, which subsequently resulted in an infection.

The incident took place at around 11.50am on Monday, August 29 2022 - however police are only just releasing details.

Officers investigation the dog bite incident are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

The owner of the German Shepherd is described as white, aged in his late 60s, around five feet nine inches tall and of medium build.

The victim believes the man called his dog something like Smokey, and it is described as black with a little bit of brown and white and medium length hair.

Police Constable Jennie Sykes-Martin, of Dorset Police, said: “I appreciate this incident was some time ago, but we are continuing to make enquiries and I would urge anyone with information that might assist our investigation to please come forward.

“I would also urge the owner of the dog involved to do the right thing and come forward so we can take your account.”
