I think your correspondent (Vote ‘no’ - Letters 25th August) who suggested there is likely to be a snap election called when the new PM is installed is in for a disappointment. The last poll I saw gave Labour a 15-point lead over the Tories.
However, what I find disturbing about this letter is that he/she encourages voters to waste their vote by writing the words “I want PR” on their ballot paper.
When the next General Election comes, the answer, as demonstrated clearly in recent by-elections is tactical voting. I suspect even here in Dorset, if dissatisfied voters lined up behind the Liberal Democrats in West Dorset, and Labour in South Dorset, we could rid ourselves of both the present Tory incumbents in one fell swoop.
There seems to be an increasing appetite for Proportional Representation, but that is only going to happen via support from the parties currently in opposition, as I am afraid nobody is going to take any notice of how many votes have such a demand scrawled on ballot papers in West Dorset!
