Volunteers have painted the 186-seat stand at a football club in Dorset.

Volunteer Centre Dorset (VCD) has been working in collaboration with George Stockley and Bridport Football Club in order to engage young adults with learning disabilities.

The group took three weeks preparing the site and five weeks to paint - using the traditional red and black colours of The Bees.

Siobhan Davis, from VCD’s Community Credit Scheme, said: “It’s fantastic that they are able to learn transferable skills not only for work but social skills, as well, and developing their confidence towards them getting a paid job.

Having this sort of opportunity and support from the football club is so inspiring for them and you really can see their confidence grow.”

The stand at St Mary’s Field was built in 1985 after the wooden one was taken down following the fire at Bradford City ground.

Siobhan added: "We like to focus on what the volunteers can do as opposed to what they can't do but, because of Covid, a lot of the opportunities to develop those skills took a hit. It's really good for them to be settled back into these sort of activities.

"It can be difficult to find volunteers like George and Lisa they are amazing and give much of their time into volunteering for the local community: (and) most of all engaging wotj people and supporting them to learn new skills.

Volunteer Centre Dorset are always looking for more volunteers and facilitators in order to provide as many opportunities as possible - expenses are reimbursed and for more information call 01305269214 or register on www.volunteeringdorset.org.uk
